Porches and porticos are architecture first, construction second. The same square footage can elevate a home or fight it — the difference is whether the design speaks your house's language. Here's how we match these structures to Greater Boston's housing styles, and how a project moves from sketch to final coat of paint.

Matching the Architecture

Colonials and Greek Revivals carry classical vocabulary: round or square columns with correct proportions, dentil or simple frieze details, low-pitched pediments over the door. Get the column-to-roof ratio right and it looks like 1840; get it wrong and it looks like a kit.

Capes want modesty — a simple gabled portico on brackets, or a full farmer's porch with square posts and clean rails. Overscaled columns sink a Cape instantly.

Victorians invite ornament: turned posts, brackets, spindle friezes — reproduced faithfully by a custom carpentry shop rather than approximated from the lumberyard aisle.

Modern farmhouse and contemporary homes lean on clean square posts, black-framed details, standing-seam metal porch roofs, and unadorned rails — restraint as the style.

Planning the Project

  1. Photo-based design — we start with images of your façade and produce options; you can preview concepts free with our AI Design Preview
  2. Scope and budget — a bracketed portico, a columned entry, and a full wraparound porch live in very different ranges; the Instant Budget Estimator sets expectations early
  3. Permits — porches and porticos are structures; we permit and inspect them properly in every town we serve
  4. Build — footings below frost, correct ledger and roof tie-ins, flashing everywhere water travels, then the finish carpentry that makes it look original
  5. Paint and punch — traditional gray porch floors, beadboard ceilings (haint blue optional), and a final walkthrough
